On one of the bookshelves in our family room- just at toddlers' eye level- is a thin, bedraggled red book. The cover is well scuffed, the binding cracked. Pages threaten to fall out. There is another version of that book next to it. Pristine. Expensive. Nicely illustrated. My preference is obviously the older, cheaper, and obviously well-loved copy.

That sad little tome probably came from the bookstore at the mall. The contents? Clement Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas" charmingly illustrated by Arthur Rackham. It's been read at least once every year since it was purchased in 1989 for our daughter's first Christmas. So. "Twas the Night Before Christmas.) Have you...

Perhaps five years before my first child arrived, I ran into "Cajun Night Before Christmas" while vacationing in New Orleans. It was May, but who could resist St. Nick in a gator powered skiff? Certainly not Desk. Though I cheaped out and bought the coloring book version. Yes. Still on the book shelf. Written and illustrated by James Rice- with coloring by the Desk children. Have you run into this parody of the classic?

Don't know where it came from. Perhaps a school Book Fair? Not sure either where it's disappeared to. But once owned a copy of "The Teacher's Night Before Christmas." (Text by noted literacy expert Steven Layne, illustrations by James Rice.) Gave a copy of "The Principal's Night Before Christmas" to my favorite of the several I worked with. The best middle school librarian in the history of middle school librarians bought her own. Were/Are you a...

Although Rice wrote and illustrated a number of Night Before books, he also teamed up to provide illustrations for other authors. Which of these Night Before Christmas themes might you be interested in reading? (These do exist)

To my about to be not so secret embarrassment, I once wrote my own parody of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" which was very specific to the store where I worked at the time. I was young. I was foolish. My co-workers thought it was a hoot. Anyway. Have you ever written your own version of the poem?
