Since just before Halloween, the Kohl's Mom has been telling me it's never too early to decorate for Christmas. It's apparently never too early to pop out the Christmas ads either. Annoying at times, but honesty compels me to admit great fondness for some of those ads...
1. Santa has been sledding down a snow covered hill since the 1960s encouraging us to give electric shavers as Christmas gifts. My family first saw him on a black and white tv. As kids we loved it. Still do. In which decade do you recall first seeing this television ad?

2. The "Christmas Bells" ad for Hershey's Kisses rang its way into our hearts all the way back in 1989. However, hearts were not happy when the ad changed in 2020 to show a Kiss being taken by a little girl baking cookies. A version showing a relieved Kiss hopping back into the frame quickly appeared on our screens. Do you remember the backlash over the change to this beloved ad?

3. When the Red and Yellow M&Ms and Santa encountered each other back in '96, it was marketing magic. Santa's exclamation, "They do exist!" is still a part of the company's holiday advertising. My Millennial kids still consider red and green Christmas M&Ms a family traditon. I haven't seen the ad yet this year. Have you?

4. Though not holiday themed, the Campbell's "Snowman" commercial has been a winter staple since 1996. The ad shows a snowman warming up over a bowl of soup- melting away to reveal a rosy cheeked little boy. On a cold day, it often inspires me to make a big pot of homemade soup. Do you have a favorite comfort meal for those cold days of winter?

5. No one does Christmas marketing like Coca-Cola. Heck. They practically invented it. But. Last year's AI generated "Holidays are Coming" sparked criticism. And Coke isn't backing away from its use of AI. This year's ad campaign is getting backlash for wonky animals, trucks with extra rows of wheels, and visual inconsistencies. At our house it has become the commercial we love to hate. If you have seen these ads, do you, like my daughter, find them "downright creepy?"

6. Ad campaigns like the "Christmas Bells" have longevity because they are simple, memorable, or strike a chord with viewers. Also, since the are only seen during the holidays, are nostalgic and fresh at the same time. Which is why I wish the Kohl's Mom and Target's sexy Santa would at least let me get the Halloween decorations down and acknowledge Remembrance Day/Veterans Day before pressuring me into Christmas. Do you think holiday advertising starts too early?
