The Tokyo Olympics should be all about the spirit of competition and athletics, but as usual, the policing of female athletes' bodies is still a hot topic. Even before the games began, a Norwegian women's beach handball team was in a battle with the European Handball Federation to wear less-revealing uniforms. After the team's repeated complaints about the required bikini bottoms were reportedly ignored, they wore shorts during a recent game in protest and were fined 150 euros (around $175) per player, over "a case of improper clothing." The Olympic Broadcasting Service said this year's coverage will be different from past ones. One of the mottos for the Games is "sport appeal, not sex appeal." They promised their coverage will not focus on some of the past practices, such as close-up parts of women's bodies, and focusing on what the female athletes are wearing. The German gymnastics team has protested by wearing unitards, that stretched to their ankles, instead of the usual bikini-cut leotards, intending to push back against sexualization of women in gymnastics. The point is that women competing should be able to wear or not wear anything as long as they can perform well in their choice. Do you agree that the over-sexualization of women in sports should end?

Women being judged on their perceived femininity or sex appeal, rather than their athleticism is a symptom of a bigger problem. Sports are often a "microcosm of our society, and woman have long been judged on their appearance rather than their abilities, with societies' perceived notion of how women should look. This happens not just in sports, but in the media, in the arts, in every aspect of their lives. Have you ever judged someone solely on their appearance?
