As some of you know, I have an adult son that participates in the Special Olympics. He's been attending practice with his team and will be competing next month. I want to thank all of the volunteers that make these events possible. I would also like to mention that I'm creating this survey at 1:00 a.m., so if it's not perfect, I'm fine with that. Hope you are too. :-)

My son is signed up for the 50 meter dash. He doesn't actually "run" (as most people would define it). Doctors and specialists once told me he'd never walk, so I have to hold back tears of joy every time I see him compete in this event. If only those doctors could see him now! Have you ever accomplished something or witnessed someone else accomplishing something that caused you to shed tears of joy?
I have.

We have a rope with a piece of PVC tube that we bring with us. We slip the PVC pipe on one end of the rope. He holds that cut tube and runs with it until he gets to the other end of the rope. Volunteers hold the rope (to keep tension on it). If you couldn't see, would you feel comfortable running with only a rope to guide you?

He will also be competing in the softball throw. In this event, the athletes throw the ball as far as they can. Volunteers then measure the distance. My son tends to throw straight down (rather than out), but he's proud of each throw. Are you good at throwing?
Yes, I have distance and aim. I could intentionally throw a rock at a window and break it from a block away.

Um, not so much. I could hit myself in the face trying to throw a Frisby for a dog.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm never going to be a professional pitcher, but I can throw well enough to get by.

His last event is the unified 1K and 5K bike races. Riders have a non-disabled partner. I, unfortunately, am not able to keep the tandem bike upright and get it going (without a push - which isn't allowed) with my son on the back. So, my husband gets to be the other rider. Last year, my son finished his race with a huge grin on his face. My husband, on the other hand, stumbled off of the bike, collapsed to the ground, and was gasping something about the route being entirely uphill and almost ending up in a pond. Who would you rather be?
I'd rather be the athlete. He got a medal.

I'd rather be the partner, because I love biking up hills. The pond was probably just there in case athletes needed to cool off.

I'd rather be the observer - the one that gets to take pictures and doesn't have to get all sweaty.
