A CAPTCHA is an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart" and it comes in various forms, some of which seem unnecessary and some of which make us think a robot designed the CAPTCHA to keep humans out. Here are some examples. Sources include Wiki and misc. consumer blogs.

1. The most common type is (to me anyway) the most irritating and time consuming to "solve" It is the one with the squiggly writing and, given that my own writing is illegible it would take a robot to design a CAPTCHA that is more illegible than my own writing. In this example I would have been completely baffled and would have had to click for another attempt. What do you think?

2 The test is administered by a computer and has been widely criticized, especially from those with disabilities, but also from people who find their work being slowed down by distorted words that are difficult to read. Sources say it takes on average 10 seconds to solve a typical CAPTCHA On mobile phones they could create ill will for a website visitor who may give up before getting to the website. If the site is an e-commerce one, they have lost a sale. What is your experience with this type?

What prompted this survey was another survey (not TW) which itself seemed to have been designed by a robot because it would require something other than human intelligence to get meaningful marketing data from the survey answers. One of the products I was giving feedback on was my recent purchase of a toaster. Here are some of the types of questions I was asked about my toaster. As a human (a reasonable assumption) which questions would have been difficult to answer?
