Results: New cars have all sorts of stuff nobody asked for. They also don't have a lot of stuff we used to have that few will miss. This is about the old stuff.

I got a "new-to-me" car last summer and really like it. It does not have some features cars used to have but they have been replaced by something better, safer, more convenient or simply better looking. If you had the option, would you want to keep some of them?

Considering the number of times I have had a flat tire, do I really need a full size spare to lug around wherever I go when the compact spare cars have these days is so much lighter and takes up much less space. We used to have to rotate 5 tires and replace 5 tires more often than we do these days. Do you still prefer a full size spare tire?

Nobody asked for this option but I must admit I miss it. My first 2 cars had a vinyl roof and they lasted the life of the car. Newer (relatively speaking) vinyl roofs didn't last as long, perhaps because of ozone or UV rays or some other reason. You don't see this type of car roof these days. Did you ever like them?

What about whitewall tires? Do they even make them anymore? They would probably look silly on today's smaller cars, especially on an SUV. Nevertheless they did look good on some of the big cars we used to have. Did you like whitewall tires - especially with those spoke trims?

Did you ever accessorize your wheels and tires? How fancy did you get?

I'm in two minds about this one. The gas tank filler hidden behind the license plate. It didn't matter which side of your car the pump was. However a fill up could be really messy with the grime on the plate (but it was the man's job to gas up usually). And the filler pipe led to a huge gas tank situated right under the back seat. Modern gas tanks are smaller and more protected . But you have to remember which side the gas cap is. Should they have the gas cap in the middle like they used to?

I won't miss this one and pedestrians are safer now that these are gone (unless you have an old Jaguar, Rolls-Royce or similar). The elimination of the hood ornament also eliminated some pretty horrific injuries between cars and humans. These adornments used to be rigid, then they made them spring loaded and now you rarely see one. Did you ever have a car with a hood ornament or add one to your car?

Have you ever been hit by a car while walking or know someone who has. What kind of injuries?
  • My pastor was hit by a car while changing a flat tire. Drunk going wrong way on an on ramp. Caused significant brain damage and he can no longer work. God works in mysterious ways.
  • Yes. I was hit by a car when I was 3 years old, and again when I was 8.
