My "new-to-me" car from last summer does not have some features cars used to have. If you had the option, would you want to keep some of them? Here are some examples.

This option was only used (by me) for longer trips and not in city driving. I used to enjoy a cigar on long distance trips and the pop out cigarette lighter was the safest way to light it. I don't know what cigarette smokers use these days but matches or cigarette lighters you have to click and take your eyes off the road to use can't be as safe. Cigars are much too expensive these days and smoking in your car is anti-social and makes it more difficult to sell (a loss in value of at least $1,000). I no longer smoke in my car - do you?

Back in the days when cars didn't have air vents in the dash and didn't come standard with A/C, the only option was to open a window (or two), especially if the driver was a cigar smoker. These days most cars come with A/C and you actually burn less gas with the A/C on and the windows closed. It is certainly much quieter with the windows closed. Do you like to drive with a window open (weather permitting)?

Cranking a window open or closed used to require physical effort but these days it is push button. This is fine unless the motor fails or the battery is flat. The crank method allowed you to open more precisely if you had small children or a dog in the back and wanted fresh air with minimum noise. Cars also have childproof locks these days. My kids knew to not mess with the windows, or open doors or "mess about" when in the car. Not all kids behaved and accidents happened that are more rare nowadays. Also these buttons and levers could cause injuries to legs or arms in a crash depending on where these metal items were located. In balance, do you prefer today's power windows and locks?

If you ever came back to your car and found it looking like the one in the photo, you probably won't miss the days when you had to add a radio or tape deck after you bought your vehicle. Thieves would break your windows to steal these accessories and leave a mess behind. One solution was the removable face plate but what were you supposed to do with it? Carry it in your pocket? Now that cars have "info-tainment" built in, there is less of a market for stolen car stereos. Have you ever had someone break into your car to steal the stereo?
