The flimsy pages and patriotic designs betray just how many security measures are hidden inside. On its face, a passport is little more than a booklet barely the size of a greeting card. But it’s a powerful tool, facilitating movement across borders, and for some, serving as the most reliable proof of identity and nationality.

Canada's Newest Passport: Beyond the new images, the single biggest change is to the document's data page that features the owner's picture and personal information. The new page is made out of polycarbonate thermoplastic on which an owner's data is laser-engraved (instead of printed with ink) with a new proprietary font. That allows the designers to also emboss certain characters on the page for an added layer of security. Have you travelled with a Passport sometime during 2024?

This innovation, in the form of a mobile app, lets travelers securely store and present their passport information on their smartphones, eliminating the need for carrying a physical document. Launched on August 28, 2023, the initiative is a collaborative effort between Finland, Finnair, the Finnish police, and Finavia, the airport operator. This initiative aligns with a broader European Union (EU) plan to test digital passports in a bid to enhance travel technology and security measures. Would you be comfortable with a Digital Passport?
