A recent news report describes how hospitals in the US are buying information from data brokers to determine how likely you are to get sick and what it may cost to treat you. They are buying the same type of data that retailers have been using for years to target products at you. Now hospitals are saying that they can use this information to try to predict who is going to get sick and who is going to end up at the emergency room. Under the current health care law, hospitals can be penalized if a patient visits the emergency room too frequently and if they aren’t meeting certain patient quality and health outcomes.

The largest hospital chain in North and South Carolina is plugging data for 2 million people into algorithms designed to identify high-risk patients, while Pennsylvania's biggest system uses household and demographic data. Hospitals cannot use this data to discriminate against a pre-existing condition, and they're also bound by the same privacy rules as anything else you would share with your doctor. Do you live in Pennsylvania or one of the Carolinas?

Proponents of this data gathering say that doctors and nurses can use this information to reach out to high-risk patients to suggest interventions before patients fall ill. Patients and their advocates, on the other hand, say they're concerned that big data's expansion into medical care will hurt the doctor-patient relationship and threaten privacy. Regardless of which state or province you live in, do you see this trend as a good thing (helpful) or a bad thing (hurtful) for the consumer?
