National Honey Bee Day is the time of year when we honour one of nature's hardest-working creature. People owe a lot to bees -- namely, many of the foods we enjoy, like strawberries, avocados and broccoli. The US Department of Agriculture estimates that every 1 in 3 bites of food exists because of animal pollinators, and bees lead the pack. Their health is critical to the survival of all bees. When honey bees are infected with pathogens or parasites, they infect native bees that are more vulnerable to extinction. Were you aware of this information?

How many of these honey bee facts (or even general bee facts) do you know?
How many of these honey bee facts (or even general bee facts) do you know?
Honey bees live in hives (or colonies). Since they are perennial insects that survive for more than one year, they build complex hives or honey combs designed to last several years.

One queen runs the whole hive. Her job is to lay the eggs that will spawn the hive's next generation of bees. The queen also produces chemicals that guide the behaviour of the other bees.

Worker bees are all female and their roles are to forage for food (pollen and nectar from flowers), build and protect the hive, clean and circulate air by beating their wings. Workers are the only bees most people ever see flying around outside the hive.

Drones are the male bees, and their purpose is to mate with the new queen. Several hundred live in each hive during the spring and summer. But come winter, when the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out

If the queen bee dies, workers will create a new queen by selecting a young larva (the newly hatched baby insects) and feeding it a special food called "royal jelly". This enables the larva to develop into a fertile queen.

Honey which is produced by honey bees is revered as the only food that can never go bad. Honey stored properly will essentially last forever due to its unique chemical composition. Honey is created when bees collect and process nectar from flowers. The process works like this: bees find flowers with nectar, they hover over the flower and flap their wings removing some moisture from the nectar, then they collect the nectar in their mouths and hold it there, the bees have glands in their mouths which secrete an enzyme, that enzyme mixes with the nectar to create honey, the bees then essentially vomit the honey back up when they get back to their hive and it is stored in honeycomb (which bees make out of wax). Do think it is important to do what we can to help the bees survive?
