It's an event that literally happens once in a lifetime. The Queen Victoria agave at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, is due to bloom any day now — for the first and last time in its roughly 30-year life. The agave comes from Mexico, and flowers once in its lifetime, then it dies completely, with some living up to 50 years before flowering. It's also unknown exactly how the school came into possession of the agave, which is uncommon in Canada. Many of the greenhouse's flora were inherited from Expo 67 in Montreal, so it is possible that was where it came from. Regardless of how it came to Ottawa, it is surely attracting a huge crowd who are anticipating the once-in-a-lifetime event. Have you ever heard about this unusual plant?

As it prepares for the end of its lifecycle, it has been growing a tall stalk that nearly reaches the ceiling of the greenhouse where it is housed. . It wasn't there two months ago and grew more than 30 centimetres (12") in one weekend. It will start blooming at the bottom and work its way up, and is just like fireworks going off, as it explodes, one by one. The tall stalk will then bow down, as if for a final ovation, before dropping its seeds and starting the cycle anew. Have you ever seen one of these in full bloom?

A "fog dome" is a very unusual phenomenon. It is a fog that looks like a balloon. The most likely explanation is that the "fog dome" has been caused by a source of heat close to the ground, possibly an agricultural building or a relatively warm pool of water. As the fog has formed in the valley this heat source has forced the fog to lift away from the ground into a dome as warmer air rises; like a hot air balloon.
