Kudzu, or Pueraria montana, a perennial climbing vine native to Asia, was introduced to the U.S. as an ornamental plant at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 and grown as forage for livestock. It was also used by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in the 1930's and 1940's as an erosion control. The vine blankets just about everything in its path, including fences, buildings, trees and power lines. It smothers other plants and sometimes breaks off their branches or even uproots them.
