It seems every week a new reality show pops on TV and the many streaming services, some good and some, well, questionable. The reality shows where viewers phone in, text or vote online for their "favourites" sometimes seem to be all about popularity, and not always about talent. If you have ever voted in one of these reality shows, did you vote for talent or because the person was likeable?

In terms of sheer impact, the like button was one of the most successful pieces of code. Before that little like button, Facebook users only could comment on a post to show their approval. In 2007, when that little thumbs up button first made its debut, Facebook took its place right up there with all the other popularity contests. I believe, as many others on here do too, that the "upvoting" or "downvoting" of comments here on Tellwut has become that popularity tool too. Don't like the person, downvote. One of your "friends" here regardless of their comment, upvote. I personally have not used it, but see how Tellwutters have reacted to it. Do you think this practice of being able to upvote or downvote comments should be revised or even ended?

"Popularity Contest" was a (thankfully) short-lived reality show in which ten contestants from the big city were plopped down in the Route 66 town of Vega, Texas to win over and split the prize money with one of the locals of the town for $100,000. Each week, the least popular contestant was voted out. Were you one of the apparently 75 people that actually watched this "show"?
