Henry VIII is best known for his six wives. Most British school children learn the following rhyme to help them remember the fate of each wife: "Divorced, Beheaded, Died: Divorced, Beheaded, Survived". Last weekend I went to see the musical "Six" which is a six woman show about the lives of all Henry VIII's wives. Do you know the story behind the six wives of Henry VIII?

His first marriage was also his longest. He married Catherine of Aragon, who was previously married to Henry's older brother until his death, in 1509 and he forced their divorce in 1533, with her dying 3 years later.

Next, he married Catherine's lady-in-waiting, Anne Boleyn, also in 1533. She was accused of adultery with her own brother and four commoners – they were all tried and convicted of treason. She was beheaded for treason in 1536.

In 1536, shortly after Anne's beheading, Henry married his next wife Jane Seymour, who died from complications during childbirth in 1537 after a year of marriage. It's said that Henry was deeply devastated by her death, as she was the one he truly loved. But that didn't stop him from moving on, of course.

Next he was betrothed to Anne of Cleves, a German noble. The two didn't meet until their wedding day, just like an old-timey version of Married at First Sight. And just like some on Married at First Sight, he felt like he didn't get what he ordered. He soon declared that Anne of Cleves looked nothing like her portrait and that he'd been catfished. They divorced 4 days later.

Catherine Howard, who was, at most, 20 years old when they met, also had a short-lived marriage with Henry VIII. They married in 1540 and she was promptly beheaded 2 years later for her alleged affair with Thomas Culpeper.

Finally, Henry married Catherine Parr in 1543. She was the first woman in England to publish books under her own name, in English. She was to be his last wife. King Henry VIII died in 1547 and she outlived him by just over 1 year before dying in childbirth herself, after she remarried following Henry's death

Now the title of this survey is taken from a Herman's Hermit's song, and it's not about this famous Henry, but works well as a title for this survey. Not a big fan of the song, but the musical I saw I would highly recommend. Have you seen the musical "Six", and/or heard the Herman's Hermit's song?
