Trivia
I mentioned the UK TV show QI on a previous survey and some of you are already fans of the show. Here are some items I found "Quite Interesting."

In 2001, a 13-year-old Boy Scout went missing for over 18 hours near Yellowstone Park. He used his belt buckle to signal to planes overhead. Eventually, he got a pilot's attention - the pilot was Harrison Ford - who rescued him. A mirror (in this case a buckle) is a powerful tool for communicating if you are lost. In sunlight it can generate 5 to 7 million candle power. The reflected sunbeam can even be seen beyond the horizon. You would have a better than 80% chance of being spotted within 24 hours if people are looking for you. Did you know that staying put increases your chances of rescue and lets you last longer without food and water?

Despite not having played since 2018, MLB player Andrew Toles has remained under contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers so he can continue receiving mental health treatment for his schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Do you know of other "businesses" that treat "employees" with such humanity (they aren't all as heartless as the media would suggest). Comments?

On April 18 1930, the BBC's evening news report simply said "there is no news" and then played piano music for the entire segment. Today, the media would have searched the planet for negative stories it could then present as newsworthy thus creating/reinforcing the impression that our world is a dark and dangerous place. I would prefer the 1930's version of the news. Do you agree?

Weather forecasters tend to exaggerate the chance of rain because if it rains when they said it wouldn't, people get angry, but if it doesn't rain when they said it would, they are happy. This is known as "wet bias." Do you think other items in the news are exaggerated for the same reason?

When I lived near Toronto, a shortcut I took regularly had a series of S bends and, at one of them, there was a stream of water coming from the hillside. I don't know who first stopped their car right on the bend and filled water bottles with this water, but it didn't take long before many other drivers were doing the same thing assuming the water had therapeutic qualities (without any evidence of this). Aldgate Pump, a historic water pump in London's East End was long famed for its "sparkling, agreeable" water. It was later found that this "rich mineral taste" came from the flesh and bones of nearby cemeteries leeching into the water. The tainted water killed hundreds. Did you ever drink water from a "mountain stream" like the one near Toronto?
