Unlike traditional folk tales, which are generally associated with rural preliterate societies or with stories told by the very old to the very young, urban legends are shared and believed by people of all ages, classes, professions, and education levels. Every state has their own tall tales. The Travel Channel is my source for this series.
1. In the 1930's, a young woman escaped from the Carter Brothers' home in New Orleans, Louisiana with slash marks on her wrist, telling police they had fed on her blood. The police found more women in similar conditions at the brothers' residence. John and Wayne Carter were later arrested and confessed, claiming they were vampires who could not stop killing. They were tried as serial killers, convicted, and executed, but their crypts were found empty years later. Do you think that the brothers really believed that they were vampires?

2. Located in Louisville, Kentucky; you'll find Hogan's Fountain, in Cherokee Park, which features a statue of Pan, the pastoral yet devious Greek god. At every full moon—some versions say every night at midnight—the figure of Pan wanders the park, causing mischief for passersby. Would you visit this park at night?

3. Sallie, known as the "Heartland Ghost," is said to haunt a house in Atchison, Kansas, which belonged to a local doctor. When she was six, Sallie became very ill and was taken to the doctor's home. He diagnosed her with appendicitis and needed to perform surgery. Sallie panicked at the tools, and during her operation, she woke up in pain. Before dying, she looked at the doctor with fear and hate, and her spirit remains there. Have you ever had appendicitis?

4. As the saying goes, a woman scorned is not someone you want to mess with. Lucinda of the town of Burlington, Iowa is no different. Urban legend says that when her fiancé failed to meet her there as promised one night, she threw herself off the bluffs along Stony Hollow Road. Ever since, her ghost has appeared to countless people. What's (much) worse, if she leaves a rose at your feet, you are destined to die within 24 hours, or so the story goes… Have you ever had your heart broken by a romantic partner?
