Results: Urban Legends of the United States. Part 10 of 24
Published on 08/04/2025
Unlike traditional folk tales, which are generally associated with rural preliterate societies or with stories told by the very old to the very young, urban legends are shared and believed by people of all ages, classes, professions, and education levels. Every state has their own tall tales. The Travel Channel is my source for this series.

Lake Lanier in Georgia is intrinsically linked to the history of Oscarville, a Black community that was submerged to create the lake in 1956, with the completion of the Buford Dam. In 1912, racial violence led to the displacement of over 1,000 Black residents following the lynching of a man accused of crimes against a White woman. The flooding of Oscarville, including a cemetery, contributed to the lake's supernatural stories, such as sightings of mysterious figures and a woman in a blue dress who is said to haunt the area. The legend of Oscarville and its connection to Lake Lanier is a powerful example of how historical events, particularly those involving racial injustice and displacement, can be woven into local folklore and shape the perceptions of a place. Since 1852, Captain Tony's, the oldest saloon in Key West, Florida, has been known to be haunted: Doors slam for no apparent reason, and there are inexplicable banging noises and frequent ghostly visitations. Before becoming a bar, the building at 428 Greene Street served as an icehouse, city morgue, wireless telegraph station, cigar factory, and even a bordello and it was built around a tree that the town once used for hanging pirates. The saloon has been frequented by notable figures like Ernest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffett. Would you be interested in having a drink at this establishment that has such a storied past?
