Trivia
Ripley's Believe It or Not! is a franchise built on the legacy of Robert Ripley (1890 - 1949), who documented odd, unusual, and unbelievable facts, people, and artifacts from around the world. The brand encompasses museums, attractions, television shows, and comics, all showcasing the strange and fascinating aspects of our world. Visitors can expect to see a wide array of exhibits, including odd art, interactive displays, and peculiar artifacts, all designed to spark curiosity and wonder. Ripley's Stories is my source for this ongoing series, where I will simply present stories that I find interesting, in no particular order. WARNING: This series will occasionally contain videos/images that some people may find disturbing. (Right click or tap and hold to open image in a new tab.)

Ripley's Believe It or Not! features a pair of African fertility statues that have gained fame for their purported ability to help couples conceive. The statues, carved from ebony wood by the Baule tribesmen of the Ivory Coast in the 1930's, are said to bring about pregnancy when touched, especially when placed at the entrance of a bedroom. Ripley's acquired the statues in 1993 and placed them at their headquarters, where they were soon associated with a "baby boom" among employees. The statues have since become a popular exhibit, traveling to various Ripley's locations and inspiring countless stories of successful pregnancies. Do you think that these statues can actually help with fertility?

Cheddar is a rare orange lobster rescued from a Red Lobster restaurant in Hollywood, Florida, in July 2022. Her bright orange coloring is due to a genetic mutation, and when she was found, it was believed that she was a one in a 30 million find. Her coloring makes her more vulnerable to predators in the wild, so it's understandable why this was such an exciting find. Cheddar now lives at Ripley's Aquarium, where she can be protected and enjoyed by visitors. Shortly after, another orange lobster named Biscuit was rescued from a Red Lobster in Mississippi. Jared Durrett from Ripley's Aquarium suggests that orange lobsters may not be as rare as previously thought; "Lobsters obtain their color through the pigments they ingest in their diet. If these orange lobsters are being harvested from the same region, perhaps their localized diet contains a pigment that, when paired with the lobster's genetics, creates the orange coloration we are seeing." Do you enjoy eating lobsters?
