I love lobster and many people see it as a delicacy with prices that reflect this. It was not always this way. Here are some historical details about lobster that you may find interesting. Which ones are?

In colonial America, lobster was seen as the cockroach of the sea. When European settlers arrived in North America in the 17th century, they found a shoreline littered with them. Lobsters were so prevalent, they being used by the native population as fishing bait or fertilizer.

Eating lobster was useful in times of food scarcity but a lobster or fish weren't desirable. Seafood was mostly fed to prisoners and indentured servants working off their contracts.

Rules were put in place to prevent inmates from receiving regular servings, while servants had lobster limits in their contracts. But for nearly two centuries, lobster was anything but a luxury.

Its reputation didn't really begin to change until improved transportation allowed fresh lobster to reach inland diners, many of whom enjoyed vacationing at the seaside and saw seafood as a treat. As demand grew, so did prices, and lobster transformed from a lowly sea pest to a food fit for a king or queen or wannabe.

Now that I know this, it puts me right off eating this type of seafood.

The retail price range in Canadian Dollars for lobster is between CAD 29.96 and CAD 39.78 per kilogram or between CAD 13.59 and CAD 18.04 per pound(lb) in Ottawa. I will comment about what I think of this price.
