Montana is the only state in the U.S., and shares this distinction with only a handful of other countries (Japan, Ghana, and The Gambia), where both spouses can be absent from a marriage ceremony for the marriage to be legal. Known as a "double proxy marriage", this unusual arrangement allows for stand-ins to legally take vows on behalf of the couple, a practice that originated for soldiers and others unable to attend their own ceremonies.
