Trivia

1. On a cold day in New York, 1902, Mary Anderson, a visionary inventor, noticed how drivers struggled with snow-covered windshields. Determined to find a solution, she created the world's first windshield wiper, operated from inside the car to clear snow and rain with ease. At the time, her idea was met with skepticism by car manufacturers, who failed to see its potential. Yet history proved her right, the windshield wiper became an essential safety feature for drivers worldwide. Though Mary Anderson's name faded into obscurity, her invention lives on every time a wiper clears the way, guiding drivers safely through rain and snow. Have you ever heard of Mary Anderson whose invention keeps us safe while driving through rain and snow?

2. Her invention was even credited to a man, and many did not know that a woman had created it years before. Anderson never profited from her invention or was given any recognition. Sara-Scott Wingo, Anderson's great-great niece suspect Anderson's invention never went anywhere because Anderson was an independent woman. Wingo said in an interview with NPR News, "She didn't have a father. She didn't have a husband. And the world was kind of run by men back then." According to the National Inventors Hall of Fame, her invention was simply ahead of its time, and other companies and entrepreneurs were able to profit off her original ideas. Do you find it shameful how she was treated and left with nothing while others continue to profit off her invention to this day? (She passed away in 1953 at 87)
