Ripley's Believe It or Not! is a franchise built on the legacy of Robert Ripley (1890 - 1949), who documented odd, unusual, and unbelievable facts, people, and artifacts from around the world. The brand encompasses museums, attractions, television shows, and comics, all showcasing the strange and fascinating aspects of our world. Visitors can expect to see a wide array of exhibits, including odd art, interactive displays, and peculiar artifacts, all designed to spark curiosity and wonder. Ripley's Stories is my source for this ongoing series, where I will simply present stories that I find interesting, in no particular order. WARNING: This series will occasionally contain videos/images that some people may find disturbing. (Right click or tap and hold to open image in a new tab.)
1. Born on August 27, 1911, in Baltimore, Maryland, Johnny Eckhardt entered the world as one of identical twins. But unlike his brother Robert, Johnny was born with no lower half; his body ended just below the ribs (sacral agenesis). Yet rather than viewing this as a limitation, Johnny saw it as an opportunity to live life his own way. Billed as Johnny Eck, he was a performer in sideshows and a film actor. Eck is best known today for his role in Tod Browning's 1932 cult classic film Freaks and his appearances as a bird creature in several Tarzan films. Have you ever watched any of the classic Tarzan films?

2. Artist Michael Papadakis captured the 2024 total solar eclipse for Ripley's Believe It or Not! using a technique called heliography, which involves focusing the sun's rays onto a wooden canvas with mirrors and lenses. He created the piece live during the eclipse on April 8, 2024, in Grand Prairie, Texas, where it is displayed today. Have you ever viewed a total eclipse?
