The word apocalypse comes from the greek word "apokalupsis" which means "a disclosure of truth, or a revealing of something before unknown". It is part of the greek name of the last book of the Bible (literally "The revelation of Jesus Christ") which prophesies of the last days of this age - and is probably why people have come to use it as a word for the end of the world.
