An oxymoron (from the Greek oxy "sharp" + moros "dull") is any term with seemingly contradictory or paradoxical elements that is nonetheless true. Some people will tell you that what is simply a contradiction in terms is not technically an oxymoron but language is an organic thing and so definitions and proper usage are what the majority understand them to be at any given time and not what pious language police say they used to be. (This is how "compete" gets to be a noun, "access" gets to be a verb and "irregardless" gets accepted into the Oxford dictionary as a real word.) So with this in mind, along with the view that most really good oxymorons started unintentionally and contain an element of ironic or hypocritical humor, what are some of your favorite oxymorons?
