Louis Comfort Tiffany gave the impression that he designed all his pieces, but many talented women worked behind the scenes at Tiffany Studios executing exceptional works of stained glass lamps and windows, and mosaics.
1. Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), son of Tiffany & Co founder Charles, was an artist and influential designer of leaded glass windows and lamps, metalwork, enamels, furniture, and textiles in his father's business. He became the company's first Design Director when Charles died in 1902. He established the Tiffany Artistic Jewelry dept in the Fifth Avenue store in NYC. Louis was inspired by the flowers, foliage, fruits, insects, birds, and landscapes in the Art Nouveau movement. Do you like his painting? (pictured)

2. Louis founded Tiffany Studios in 1884, which housed the Glass Cutting division. When the male glass cutter union went on strike in 1892, an all-female division was created, where the Tiffany Girls created patterns from artwork, and cut glass into pieces to be assembled by men. The women employees were paid a salary equal to that of the men. Does this seem progressive to you for the time?
