Mojo Nixon (born Neill Kirby McMillan, Jr.) was a singer-songwriter whose often humorous, sometimes political work encompassed country, rock, and other genres, though he was also an actor, radio announcer and, awards show host. likely among other other things. He died in February 2024 of cardiac arrest at age 66. My first exposure to Nixon was by a song/recitation on the first album credited to him and his 1985-89 musical accompanist, Skid Roper (nee' Richard Banke), "Jesus At McDonald's" (warning: it's kind of bawdy in parts). Are you familiar with Nixon, and, maybe, any of his work?

Nixon admitted to possessing more enthusiasm than talent, though his combination of both earned him a career allowing himself ingratiation to many musical subcultures. Though he never had a "hit" in much of a traditional sense, Nixon permeated popular culture at a certain level. Possibly his best known work, and among his family-friendliest, is his and Roper's 1987 single "Elvis Is Everywhere," a rocking ditty about the supposed omnipresence of Mr. Presley a decade after his death. Do you know anyone whose enthusiasm overcame a deficient (even if only perceived by that person) of talent?

Nixon's motormouth wild man schtick impressed the suits at MTV- whether despite or because of his song about wanting to "stuff" the "muffin" of Martha Quinn, one of the cable music video channel's original crew of presenters, I can't say--to allow him to star in a series of promotional spots for the station. In one of them, Nixon speaks of of his so-called holy trinity. Whether or not you deify any of them (I advise you don't), which of the persons in his supposed godhead do you appreciate in one way or another?

When MTV refused to play the video for Nixon and Roper's unabashedly goofy 1989 tune "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child," which stars actress Winona Ryder as the titular then-teen dance pop singer (Nixon also name-checks therein hot late '80's pop stars Tiffany and Rick Astley, as well as Bud Light beer's canine mascot Spuds Mackenzie), that's when the relationship soured. But Nixon did OK after that, recording occasional solo albums, touring, landing parts in both animated and live action movies, hosting the Ameripolitan Awards ceremonies honoring excellence in under-recognized roots music genres (not some of Nixon's prouder moments, as he seriously misread the room and cussed up a storm two consecutive years ), and other activities. But back to the song that voided Nixon's relationship with MTV, either based on its title or what you've heard of it, do you think it's so controversial for the channel's censors--or whomever--to have nixed it?

At the time of his passing, Nixon was an announcer on Sirius XM satellite radio's Outlaw Country station. And it was on the latest Outlaw Country cruise where he experienced the cardiac incident that felled him. I've never heard Nixon in that context, but i'm supposing he never played anything by Eagles nor one of their co-founders, as in 1990 he recorded "Don Henley Must Die." Henley joined Nixon onstage at least once to sing the song decrying him, proving that he can take a joke better than Nixon may have thought. If someone recorded a song calling for your death, do you think you'd have it in you to sing along with it?

Why would anyone want to record a song about me, much less one calling for my death?!
