A weak handshake can be an indication of increased frailty. Grip strength has been linked to dementia, cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Mark Peterson, a professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Michigan, says grip strength correlates with changes in a person's DNA that indicate how fast they are aging. He suggests strength training. "People who have strong grip strength tend to have strong legs, backs and arms," says Mr. Peterson. Basically, people who work out tend to be stronger all over than people who don't. Do you or have you ever strength trained?

Swollen and painful fingers are the results of arthritis. The two most common types are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA usually affects both hands and often involves the joints where the fingers meet the hands. OA may affect a single hand or digit and often leads to bony overgrowths at the finger's middle or last joint. Stuart Kaplan M.D. is chief of rheumatology at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, NY. He notes there are great drugs for RA called biologics that can change the course of the disease and stop it in its tracks if caught early enough. For OA, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and anti-inflammatory creams help with the discomfort. Do you suffer from pain in your hands?
